In just a matter of days, Apple will finally be unveiling the next operating system for the iPhones -- iOS 18 at WWDC24. The company is said to be adding several AI features to the OS, as it's lagging behind its competitors in the field of AI. To do so, Apple has reportedly resorted to third-party partnerships to power some of these features. As a result, OpenAI’s ChatGPT could be backing Siri and other AI features on iOS 18, and Microsoft seems worried about it.
According to a report by The Information, Apple has been internally testing a version of Siri that depends on ChatGPT. The company is reportedly not ready to introduce its chatbot yet, pushing it to seek help from third parties. However, the company could use its LLMs to back the less demanding iOS 18 features, such as on-device summarization.

Why Is Microsoft Worried About Apple-OpenAI Partnership?
The potential Apple-OpenAI partnership for iOS 18’s AI features is reportedly not going down very well with Microsoft. That’s because OpenAI relies heavily on its servers to provide some of its services. That said, adding Apple users to its client base could overwhelm Microsoft’s data centers.
To put things in perspective, there are over 2.2 billion active Apple devices right now. Not to mention the fact that Microsoft will also have to compete with whatever AI features Apple provides for its users.
WWDC24 will begin on June 10 and run till June 14, and the company is expected to announce iOS 18, iPadOS18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11 during the keynote. The company’s upcoming operating system updates could bring in some major AI features that will be revealed in the coming days.
