On 8 April 2024, Google launched their Find My Device network in the US and Canada. With the latest Find My Device network, users can create their own Android tracking network, just like Apple’s Find My asset tracker. One of the bizarre features of the Find My Device tracking network was to “Locate Offline Devices”. With the “Locate Offline Devices” option, Pixel 8 owners can find their phones, whether offline or without any power.
In their blog post, Google only mentioned that with the Pixel hardware in Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, owners could “find their devices if they’re powered off or the battery is dead”. While everyone was wondering whether other Android devices were capable of doing this, Android Authority reported that Google is working with SOCs and smartphone OEMs to bring this feature to other Android smartphones, starting with the premium segment.

Google Working With Other Smartphone OEMs To Feature Powered Off Device Tracking
According to the conversion between Google and Android Authority, Google explained that Pixel 8 smartphones use special Bluetooth chips, which enable them to operate even if the smartphone runs out of battery or is switched off. Google is working with other OEMs to integrate such chips on their smartphones. While replying to Android Authority’s queries over the Find My Device network, a Google representative said:
We are working with other SOCs and OEMs on how we can bring the capability to find devices with dead batteries to additional premium Android devices.
Google plans to extend its “Locate Offline Device” feature to other premium Android smartphones, possibly the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Google’s implementation of this feature on existing devices remains uncertain.
With the latest Find My Device tracking, Google brought features like Locate Offline Devices, Device tracking with Bluetooth tags, and more for the Android ecosystem. Here is the list of all the features that Google boasted during the announcement of the Find My Device tracking network.
- Locate Offline Devices: With Locate Offline Devices, Android smartphone owners can locate their devices even if they are offline. The features extend to Pixel 8 smartphones, where finding the device is possible even if they are switched off or run out of battery.
- Bluetooth Tag Support and Locating Nearby Items: From May 2024, the Google Find My Device network can work with third-party smart tags brands like Chipolo and Pebblebee and can be used to keep an eye on everyday items like keys, wallets and more. Google also mentioned that brands like Motorola, Eufy, and Jio will soon launch Bluetooth tags.
- Nest Integration and Sharing: Users can integrate the Find My Device network with Nest to locate their lost devices with the help of the device’s proximity to the home Nest devices. Android users can even share access to their devices with their friends and family using the Find My Device network.
