Despite us inching closer to the Grand Theft Auto 6 or GTA 6, we are still coming across stories about GTA 5’s development. According to a former Rockstar Games developer, the game was set to get a story DLC, but that it was cut to make room for the “cash cow” GTA Online.
Joe Rubino, editor and did second-unit directing on the DLC, recently guested on the SanInPlay YouTube channel and described the DLC as “kickass” and “awesome.” He said that the success of GTA Online meant leaders at the company didn’t think it was worth spending a huge sum on both projects.

Why Did Rockstar Games Cancel GTA 5 DLC?
Joe Rubino did not offer up details on specifics but said that Trevor actor Steven Ogg was involved in the canceled DLC. “When [GTA Online] came out, it was so much of a cash cow, and people were loving it so much that it was hard to make an argument that a standalone DLC would compete,” he said. “Looking back now, I would say that you could probably do both.”
While the free-to-play GTA Online was still popular, bringing in thousands of players on Steam, Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the top-selling games of all time. According to Take-Two Interactive’s February financials, it managed to sell more than 195 million copies to date. It even managed to beat out a bunch of Call of Duty games to become the top-selling game of the 2010s.
However, some aspects of the project weren’t shut down completely. He said that the project was half done, and elements were eventually incorporated into GTA Online. The teams were working on both GTA games and Red Dead Redemption 2 at the same time, so when the DLC was canceled, many of them moved over to GTA Online.
Rubino, who has since worked with Amazon Games and NetEase, also offered more insight into the security situation around Rockstar Games, especially the New York City office. He noted that people had to go through three levels of security to get to their part of the company, which handled a lot of the story and early development.

Rockstar Games Could Integrate Cryptocurrency In GTA 6
Rumors are rife that the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 or GTA 6 will use cryptocurrency as an in-game currency. Recently, a pseudonymous Crypto Twitter influencer called Gordon, shared with his followers that “GTA 6 will enable cryptocurrency payments,” and that “so far only Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT [are] confirmed.”
However, in reality, no cryptocurrencies have been confirmed for GTA 6, despite the ongoing rumors about it for a long time. Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two have made no such announcements on the matter, and the official trailers and announcements have made no mention of crypto inclusion.
