Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, received an unexpected positive reception from the audience and critics, making it one of the popular co-op third-person shooter games of 2024. While Helldivers 2 is doing well, fans were looking forward to some crossovers with upcoming popular games, TV shows and more. Arrowhead rejected the idea of a crossover by stating they “don’t want to be Fortnite.”
Fortnite evolved from a third-person shooter battle royale game to something more than that. Epic Games collaborated with Marvel for Infinity Gauntlet (LTM), Deadpool, Captain America, and more, DC Comics for Aquaman, and Dragon Ball for bringing characters like Goku and Vegeta.

Arrowhead Game Studios Open To The Idea Of The Addition Of New Melee Weapons In Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 received a positive reception from the fans, and the selling of 8 million units in the first two months speaks for the game’s popularity. Arrowhead shifted from the top-down shooter genre to a third-person shooter for Helldivers 2, inspired by real firearms fired against armoured targets. The game is available on PlayStation 5 and Windows and provides an optional crossplay between the platforms.
While Helldivers 2 offers a unique experience, fans asked the devs about the upcoming in-game content and weapons like melee on Helldivers’ Discord server. Soon, questions regarding the crossovers also started popping up, and in responding to those questions, the community manager replied:
Melee weapons could be plausible. Lightsabers from Star Wars would not. We don’t want to be Fortnite.
After hearing the response from Helldivers’ official, Arrowhead Game Studios certainly wants to maintain its line of themes with weaponry and in-game content. While crossovers are certainly trending across popular titles and are loved by the fans, the games might lose their charm. Popular titles like Fortnite and PUBG Mobile have seen a plethora of collaboration over the past few years, but one can say that because of these crossovers, the games aren’t the same.
Arrowhead Games Studios is clear in its philosophy, and it wants to preserve Helldivers 2 with its uniqueness. Another notable feature in Helldivers 2 is that the friendly fire is always on, unlike other titles. The developers feel that having friendly fire will make the game more fun.
