Over the past few years, especially during the lockdown phase, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 mods by Cfx.re, have seen a surge in popularity. In February 2023, Grand Theft Auto Five Mod, FiveM, developed by Cfx.re, had approximately 270,000 peak concurrent players, almost double that of the unmodded version.
Seeing the increase in popularity, Rockstar Games have officially acquired Cfx.re creator community. Rockstar Games will incorporate these mods as an individual game mode and provide support and services.

Rockstar Acquires the Creators of the FiveM GTA RP Mod for GTA V, the Same Mod It Had Banned Eight Years Ago
FiveM and RedM are the GTA RP and Red Dead Redemption 2 mods developed by Cfx.re, and the player base of both the modded game have seen flourishing numbers. In 2015, Rockstar banned three creators of FiveM mode from Rockstar Social Club, stating that FiveM "is an unauthorized alternate multiplayer service that contains code designed to facilitate piracy." Over time, the matter was resolved internally.
After eight years, the incident has taken a complete turn as Rockstar acquires Cfx.re, promoting the creator community and directly incorporating the multiplayer mods from FiveM and RedM into their game. In the official statement, Rockstar said:
"Over the past few years, we've watched with excitement as Rockstar's creative community has found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers. As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community."
With the news of the development progress of GTA 6, it is speculated that Rockstar will take help from Cfx.re to develop new modes in the upcoming iteration. Alongside that, Red Dead Redemption will also be relaunching soon on PS4 and Switch, and the developers could bring back the OG game to life with the help of the new partnership. Rockstar will be sharing more information on this collaboration soon.
