Rumors are rife that the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 or GTA 6 will use cryptocurrency as an in-game currency. Recently, a pseudonymous Crypto Twitter influencer called Gordon, shared with his followers that “GTA 6 will enable cryptocurrency payments,” and that “so far only Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT [are] confirmed.”
However, in reality, no cryptocurrencies have been confirmed for GTA 6, despite the ongoing rumors about it for a long time. Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two have made no such announcements on the matter, and the official trailers and announcements have made no mention of crypto inclusion.
However, the tweet, which is accompanied by a fake trailer, has gone viral in a jiffy, with over 500,000 views in a matter of hours. When users asked Gordon about the source, he replied saying his “uncle works there.” So it’s better to take this with a pinch of salt.

Will GTA 6 Include Cryptocurrencies?
Nothing seems to have changed since Decrypt’s GG reported on rumors in May 2023, nor since the first official trailer, which initially leaked with “Buy BTC” stamped on it, apparently by the leaker in question, launched last year. Decrypt’s GG reached out to Rockstar Games for comment, but the company did not immediately respond to the query.
Could GTA 6 implement a crypto element when it hits the market? Well, it’s very much possible, and if so, it would be a transformative moment for the use of cryptocurrency by the traditional gaming industry.
Take-Two Interactive explored this space previously when it acquired casual gaming giant Zynga in early 2022 as Take-Two founder and CEO Strauss Zelnick suggested there were “Web3 opportunities” they could explore better as a unit. Zynga has since launched its first blockchain game on Ethereum, called Sugartown, but Take-Two still hasn’t joined forces with other brands.

Rockstar Games Banned Cryptocurrencies On GTA 5 Servers
Previously, Rockstar Games banned the use of cryptocurrencies or NFTs on player-run GTA 5 services, after witnessing a boost in the use of NFTs to represent unique, player-owned assets within modified game servers.
And considering the game’s satirical tone, the game might be more likely to skewer cryptocurrency and poke fun at caricatures of crypto and NFT fans, for instance, rather than launching its own coin. But that’s all speculation at this point, as there are very few details around GTA 6.
While the company hasn’t completely shut the door on the possibility of cryptocurrency being used in GTA 6, it also hasn’t confirmed anything at all. It will continue to remain a hot topic until the company offers some information about the same.
