Summer Game Fest 2023 Kick-Off Announcements and Reveals
Mortal Kombat 1
Players got a look at Mortal Kombat 1 in action and it looked positively fun. The game showcases the refinement of the fighting game mechanics players have come to know and love, including some smooth, new animations for characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The reboot serves as a great way for Netherealm to offer a different look at familiar characters and change their usual moveset and personality.
The gameplay showcase was a major highlight of the evening and fans cannot wait to get their hands on the game when it comes out on September 19, 2023.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
A surprising reveal from Ubisoft Originals, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is a brand-new offering that switches things up in a major way. The game will be the first release in the franchise in a very long time and marks the return of a beloved IP. The game appears to be a largely 2D platformer that will blend combat, parkour, and puzzles.
The game seems to be taking cues from games such as the new Metroid Prime to craft massive boss fights and intuitive combat scenarios that combine parkour and traversal. The game will be available on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on January 18, 2024.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues the Remake saga and it looks like it expands the scope of the game in a big way. In the next chapter in the new remade saga, players will now be in control of new characters such as Yiffie and explore new open-world hubs through rideable Chocobos. The game will be out in early 2024 and will exclusively be available on the PS5
Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2 also got a massive showcase at the Summer Game Fest Kick-Off show. The gameplay footage showed a massive upgrade from the original with a refined set of controls and gameplay that looks like Remedy is back in full swing and is ready to scare their fans into oblivion.
The gameplay featured a new playable character, "Saga Anderson", and showed her battling all sorts of demonic projections. The game seems to retain the original's flashlight-and-pistol mechanic with the addition of a few new tricks up its sleeve such as the dodge mechanic, which is very reminiscent of games like The Last of Us Part II.
Toxic Commando
Hollywood horror icon John Carpenter makes his way to the gaming arena, primed with a new horror-action title "Toxic Commando". The game is being developed by Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment and looks like it is a first-person title that has players go up against hordes and hordes of zombies. In addition to gunfighting, it looks like players will also be able to use vehicles at their disposal to clear themselves a path.
The game is set to come out in 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
